Episode 71: Georgia Death Race & The Bum Leg
The Georgia Death Race is one of my very favorite trail running events anywhere. The East Coast trail community shows up in a big way to run or support this amazing event. The coarse is absolutely ridiculous and at points hard just for the sake of being hard. There is liquor at about every aid station. You have to lug some mandatory gear and a rusty rail road spike all 74 ish miles. There is a stupid 2am shuttle bus to bring runners to the start as it is a point to point course. There is a lottery to even get into this race which is an event to watch in itself. I knew last year watching the lottery that I’d make this race a tradition. It was perfect. Absolutely everything I loved about ultra running and the grit of the east coast. This year didn’t turn out how I wanted. My leg really just objected to a finish and to even running in general. By mile 10 I was forced to climb mountain backwards because of the awful pain. I learned some lessons but my heart is not broken. I will be back next year for a PR and that spike.
